A belt conveyor system consists of two or more pulleys (also known as rollers). The conveyor belt—supported by the pulleys—continuously loops around them in a closed circuit. One or both of the pulleys are driven, causing the belt to move along with the material it carries. The powered pulley is called the "driving pulley," while the non-powered pulley is referred to as the "idler pulley." Typically, conveyor systems used for transporting everyday materials, such as boxes moving through a factory, differ from those employed for handling large volumes of agricultural resources and bulk materials.
According to the recommended application, the conveyor belt is made from PVC or rubber.

Belts are made up of one or more layers of material. Most belts used for general material handling consist of two layers: the outer shell, which forms the base layer and provides linear resistance and shape, and the surface layer, known as the top layer. Polyester, nylon, and cotton are the most commonly used materials for constructing the core, though various blends of rubber or plastic can also be employed to create the coating.
A belt featuring an equidistant separation zone is called a lifting belt. It is used to convey bulk materials up steep inclines. Belt conveyors are also commonly employed in self-unloading bulk carriers and chassis-mounted trucks.
