The application scenarios for steel cable conveyor belts are quite complex, which is why they have relatively high structural requirements. Compared to other types of conveyor belts, steel cable belts feature a unique skeletal structure that places specific demands on the materials used for the carcass. Below, the conveyor belt manufacturer will take a closer look at selecting the right materials for the steel cable belt carcass.
The selection of carcass materials is based on the strength specifications of the steel-cord conveyor belts, with wires of varying diameters and structures chosen accordingly. Currently, two types of steel cords are used in high-abrasion-resistant steel-cord conveyor belts: copper-plated and galvanized. Since galvanized steel cords are prone to corrosion, which can significantly reduce the lifespan of the conveyor belt, we opt for galvanized steel cords instead—and further enhance their durability by applying a special bonding layer on top. This coating effectively prevents rusting, ensuring long-term performance. Conveyor belt steel cords come in two main structural types: standard and open construction. The standard structures include three variants—6×7 + IWS, 6×19 + IWS, and 6×19W + IWS—while the open constructions consist of K6×7 + IWS, K6×19 + IWS, and K6×19W + IWS. Although these cords share the same diameter, their distinct structures result in differences in strength, flexibility, and adhesion to the rubber matrix. Notably, open-structure steel cords feature a unique design where the outer and middle wire layers interlock more tightly, allowing greater penetration of rubber into the cord. This enhanced rubber-to-wire contact not only improves adhesion but also minimizes friction and inhibits rust formation. As a result, all high-abrasion-resistant steel-cord conveyor belts are manufactured using the open-structure design. Additionally, based on the standards and performance requirements for steel-cord conveyor belts, we have standardized the specifications for these belts, ranging from ST630 to ST1000. For lower-strength models, we use K6×7 + IWS or K6×19 + IWS steel cords, while higher-strength belts (ST3150 to ST5400) are equipped with K6×19W + IWS steel cords.
